Orso: The Troll Who Couldn't Scare

By Brad Thiessen, Jeremy Balzer, Illustrator

$16.95 ~ Hardcover ~ Book No. 15142X

Ages 4-8 (or 4-8 at heart. . .)

A new children's book, illustrated by Jeremy, who grew up in Buhler and attended Tabor College. It was written by Brad Thiessen and published by CDS Books in New York.

After teaching English in Jordan, Balzer went to work as a graphic designer at his church's mission off ice in Fresno, CA. His boss was Thiessen. In 2001 Balzer moved to Denver so he could attend the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, where he now teaches.

The book is about a father who must learn that his child is not necessarily cut out to be just like him. Balzer pays homage to the wheat fields of his home state in some illustrations, according to Joan Schweighardt, CDS publicist.

Balzer started drawing at an early age, spurred by the fact his mother tired of drawing dianosaurs for him and told him to draw them himself. He didn't major in art in college because he thought it was just a hobby.

The wheatfield illustrations in the book are a tribute to his mom and dad, who were custom harvesters and traveled each summer from Texas to California to Montana. Starting in seventh grade, Balzer worked with them full-time each summer.
