State Librarian Christie P. Brandau, and Roy Bird, Director of the Kansas Center for the Book, today announced the 2007 Kansas Notable Books. Fiction, nonfiction and children's books all populate the list which is considered to contain the best of the books published by Kansas authors or about Kansas in the preceding year.
"The titles on the second annual Kansas Notable Books List all reflect not only the literary heritage of the state but also the significant amount of literary activity in Kansas today," said Bird. "The 2007 Kansas Notable Books List has something to interest every reader in the state."
Kansas Notable Book authors will be honored at the Kansas Book Festival in Wichita on October 5 and 6. A special presentation will be made to each author at the "Night of Notables," an event during the Festival to be held at the Wichita Art Museum on the evening of October 5.
Kansas Notable Books is a project of the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library of Kansas and was created to recognize the literary richness of our state. The annual selection of up to twenty reviewed books features high quality titles reflecting Kansas cultural heritage. A committee of the Kansas Center for the Book Board of Affiliates is responsible for identifying the titles and this yearÂ’s Notable Books selection committee included representatives from libraries, booksellers, publishers and authors. The committee, chaired by Roger Carswell of the Iola Public Library, considers the universe of eligible books and meets over the course of several months to evaluate and discuss, with the culmination being a recommended list presented to the State Librarian for final decision.
